The VzKat was issued in May 2017 under the General Administrative Rules for the Road Traffic Regulation ( VwV-StVO) ( German: Allgemeine Verwaltungsvorschrift zur Straßenverkehrs-Ordnung). Other traffic signs and installations not specified in the StVO, primarily specific supplementary signs, are published in the VzKat. Annexes 1 to 3 illustrate most danger, regulatory, and directional signs and annex 4 illustrates the traffic installations. §§ 39 to 43 of the StVO regulate the effect of traffic signs and installations. This execution we can't ignore anymore.Traffic signs, installations, and symbols used in Germany are prescribed by the Road Traffic Regulation ( StVO) ( German: Straßenverkehrs-Ordnung) and the Traffic Signs Catalog ( VzKat) ( German: Verkehrszeichenkatalog). And while on puns we can't afford many more E's. Major change is needed - a total upheaval to achieve total renewal.
#BUMPY ROAD AHEAD SIGN DRIVER#
You don't have to be a careful driver or walker to be at increasing risk of accident while on the road - it isn't getting safer! It may be late and sadly, by the time this note gets to you, for many it already is. Thousands of new vehicles are crunching tarmac across the country each day. Are projects progressing as planned? Are results trending as anticipated? Who needs to be recognised or rewarded? And unfortunately, where is the ball being dropped - and, what's the fix? Yes, I am dreaming - just a little. An educated child in the back seat can be a powerful driver of good behaviour! And finally, no changes take place without strong management. Not too many parents want to be falling short of children's expectations. Why isn't safety and good citizenship on our roads a mandated part of school curriculum? Post a dose of environmental study, I remember my 9 year old daughter giving me a talking to every time I needed to turn on the tap to brush my teeth. Why don't we hear and see more on this subject - radio, TV, newspapers - I haven't seen much other than public cause reporting. The need, the benefits and the role of the citizen in making this a success. My next focus would be building significant awareness of this major effort. Let's identify the big moves and get them done.

#BUMPY ROAD AHEAD SIGN SKIN#
Look, I am no expert - the point I make is that there aren't too many ways to skin this cat. I would add traffic law enforcement and licensing as potential fixes as we look to dramatically move the needle. Let me provide a few examples that frankly, are no brainers given our starting point! Road infrastructure - including road capacity, quality, pedestrian and slow moving traffic solutions, signalling and traffic management. Hopefully, a successful city pilot will create aspirational benchmarks across the country with a ready made “how to do it" tool kit as a bonus! I see the program for each pilot resolving some major issues that need to be addressed. Maybe, jointly funded by the relevant administration and private industry? The program can be measured for effectiveness both in the near term as well as over a period of time. This would need to be underpinned by powerful incentives linked to performance. The creation of a tangible plan with specific accountability at the highest levels. I would earmark 3 to 4 cities as pilots for this transformation. It requires ownership at all levels starting from the very top. Transforming conditions on our roads needs effort that is beyond the marginal tinkering we are currently engaged in. By some accounts, there are an estimated 250 traffic related fatalities everyday. The problem is getting worse - the cost of road accidents is high and rising. It appears to me, we haven't progressed even an inch wasn't it the Redline menace a few years ago? And now the devil is in Blue.

No civilised nation should behave as we do while transporting ourselves across and around this land. What has gone wrong? A little too late to look back? I guess the question is: what is needed? Change of a transformational nature is required to inject sanity on our roads. Roads are in need of modernisation, traffic management is visibly absent and driver behaviour malevolent. If we had to give ourselves a grade on road and traffic management - maybe, a charitable E? 60 years after independence, driving in India is an art form that borders on sin.
